Program Description

Students in grades 3-6 are invited to register for a unique opportunity to participate in a Music Appreciation class. The six-session class, taught by Dr. Kathleen Lavengood of the Community School of the Arts, and hosted by the Youth Services Department of the Fort Smith Public Library, will explore the classical symphony, classical composers, and a brief history of Western classical music. Children must pre-register and be present at the first class in order to participate.

Dr. Lavengood holds a doctorate is in Ethnomusicology from Indiana University, and researched fiddling in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, as a Fulbright Scholar. She is the Director of Strings and Suzuki at the Community School of the Arts and is excited to teach this special one-time free class at the library.
