The Teen Summer Lottery
It is officially summer! School is out, Parrot Island is open, and the Teen Summer Lottery has begun. The Teen Summer Lottery is our version of a summer reading program for people between the ages of 13 and 18. If you are 12 years old, you get to choose between participating in the Children's Summer Reading Program or the Teen Summer Lottery.
You may sign up at any library location at any time during the Lottery, which runs from June 1-July 31. It is best to sign up at the location where you will pick up your prizes.
How It Works
The rules are simple. To participate in the Teen Summer Lottery, you must be between the ages of 12 and 18, and you must sign up at one of the library locations. You do not need a library card to participate in the Teen Summer Lottery.
What is it?
The Teen Summer Lottery is a way for teens to get rewarded for reading or listening to books, manga and graphic novels, magazines, eBooks, and audiobooks. We would love for you to check out some of the awesome materials we have at the library for you, but if you don't have a card, or it's not in good standing, you can count the books you read or listen to that you get from other places.
What do you win?
For every book you read or listen to, you can get one scratch-off ticket. With each scratch-off ticket, you have a chance to instantly win candy or a small prize! If you don't immediately win something from your ticket, you will be entered into our weekly and grand prize drawings. Each week, we will draw a winner for a $10 gift card to local retailers and restaurants and a drawstring backpack. On August 1st, we will draw for our grand prize winner who will receive a $50 gift card!
One more thing...
Did you know you can check out movies, television shows, and CDs from the library? You can also stream movies for free by using our new Kanopy service. If you check out any of these from the library or watch on Kanopy, you can receive scratch-off tickets.
A Universe of Stories
The 2019 summer theme is "A Universe of Stories" in honor of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Every year, a new theme is chosen by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, who provides all the themed artwork and posters you see around the library.
Check out the galaxy and space themed displays and decorations in the teen area and mark your calendars for our upcoming space-themed teen programs.
If you want to go the extra light year (see what we did there), visit the teen page and check out some of our recommended Young Adult books that fit the "Universe of Stories" theme.
