World Wide Web Book Selection Tools

Resources for Teachers and Librarians

Amazon.com Books Online
In my opinion, the ultimate book-selection tool. Look up a book on Amazon.com and you can find such goodies as a story synopsis, reviews from several journals, and reviews by other people who’ve read the book and felt moved to talk about it.

Association for Library Service to Children
This division of the American Library Association provides information about notable and award-winning children’s books. Links to resources for librarians and fun sites for kids are also included.

Barnes and Noble Online Bookstore
The online version of the large chain bookstore. Like Amazon.com, it provides reviews from journals, but unlike Amazon it does not allow customers to post online reviews.

Bookwire
A good place to go if you’re looking for book or author information. Bookwire partners with several well-known journals including Library Journal and School Library Journal, both of which have online versions hosted by Bookwire.

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
This online companion to the Bulletin includes a "Homepage Archive". Unfortunately, you must have a print subscription to the Bulletin in order to search their back issue database.

Children's Literature Web Guide
This fantastic site is maintained by a librarian from Canada. It provides information about award-winning books, links to related Web sites, resources for parents, teachers and kids, and more. You can spend a long time checking out all the resources this site provides!

Children's Multicultural Learning Resource
Provides thoughtful reviews of multicultural books and poetry for children.

Fort Smith Public Library's Internet Resources for Book Lovers
A collection of links to Web sites about books and authors. Includes links to genre fiction resources and book award sites.

Publisher's Weekly
This online version of the book publishing magazine offers publishing industry news, book reviews, author interviews, as well as a list of current bestsellers.

Yahoo Children's Literature
A good place to start a search for book-related resources for kids.

Young Adult Library Services Association
This division of the American Library Association publishes several booklists for teens. You can access the lists for various years through the YALSA homepage, or recommend a title for them to consider.

Reviews By and For Kids

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Young Adult Booklist
Lots of suggested titles for young adults divided into numerous categories

Favorite Teenage Angst Books
A fun site for adults as well as for teens. Provides reassurance that angst-ridden teens are not alone, as well as reviews of YA books that deal with angst in various ways.

Just For Kids Who Love Books
This site, updated every week, includes reviews written by kids sorted by series or by title. Kids are encouraged to submit their own reviews

Reading Rants: Out of the Ordinary Teen Booklists
This site provides humorous and interesting reviews of young adult books by a YA librarian in New York. The books are arranged by category. Some of the categories include "Boy Meets Book," "Riot Grrrl!," and "Slacker Fiction."

World of Reading
Allows kids to search for book reviews by category, or by author or title. Kids can also easily submit their own book reviews using an online form.
